There is an enclosed garden behind the house laid out to a late 17th century design. It has a central lawn surrounded by a brick edge and border beds and again surrounded by gravel paths with box hedges and ornamental bay trees in box drums. A central pond with a fountain separates the lawn from a paved area with tables and chairs which, on sunny days, provides and extension to the cafe. The planting, especially the herb beds, reflect 17th century taste but the colourful in particular are of the 20th century.
The garden is hidden away from the rest of the street and provides a quiet and tranquil haven which has proved popular and refreshing for those who come there. It comes into its own with the annual July Garden Party, with summer concerts and Sealed Knot members at St Matthew’s Fair in the Autumn.
