Stuart House Trust -Heritage Projects

Stuart House Trust is acknowledged as being most proactive in promoting heritage projects for the town
-frequently working with other organisations such as the Town Council and Museum, and the Liskeard Old Cornwall Society.

The Henry Rice Trail

Henry Rice was Liskeard's most eminent Victorian architect -over 100 of his distinctive buildings are to be found in the town.

Heritage Walks in the Liskeard district

To complement the town trails, Stuart House member Iain Rowe organises heritage walks in the surrounding district. Most of the walks so far have been around the Caradon Hill mining areas. The full programme of Iain's walks in 2008 is found on this Stuart House Walks page.

Heritage projects partnerships

Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site

A recent bid to UNESCO to have the Cornwall and West Devon mining landscape designated as a World Heritage Site has been successful.
Marketing of the World heritage Site is coordinated by the Cornish Mining Attractions Marketing Association (CMAMA).

Caradon Hill Area Heritage Project

This project is a major bid to help conserve and manage around 58 square miles to the north of Liskeard, centred around Caradon Hill. The area includes the settlements of Pensilva, St Cleer, Minions, Upton Cross, Henwood. Most of Liskeard Town is included, together with the route of the Moorswater to Caradon mineral railway.

The area is of great heritage and environmental importance, with part lying within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the remainder in an Area of Great Landscape Value. A major part of the project area is included within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

Stuart House is a member of the Caradon Hill Project Partnership Group, which includes representatives from Local Authorities, Landowners and Commoners, Community groups, Mining and Heritage organisations, Museums, and Statutory Bodies.

Liskeard Town 25 year plan

The new Local Development Framework requires the town to produce such a plan. Stuart House Trust is a significant member of the working party, and has made major submissions to the Town Council on heritage and other aspects such as housing, employment and travel.


South East Cornwall Museum's Forum, SECMF

Stuart House Trust is a member of this forum which is made up of the smaller museums and heritage centres in the area.

SECMF has recently come under the wing of the national Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, and is now part of Museums, Libraries and Archives South West -MLA South West.

A major event organised nationally by MLA is Museums and Galleries Month -MgM, which runs each year throughout the month of May.
This year, 2008, Stuart House, Liskeard and District Museum, and the Liskerrett Community Centre are leading a town-wide series of events under the heading "Gardens for All".
