Gareth Lee & Annie Baylis are an up and coming acoustic folk duo from the South of Cornwall, they have been performing together since the start of 2014 and have been winning acclaim from both local and national sources including Folk Radio and Radio 2 Folk Award winners Lau.

Gareth previously enjoyed success as a solo artist winning the What’s On solo performer of the year in 2012 beating off competition of the likes of Ben Howard and Ruarri Joseph. Multi-Instrumentalist Annie, formerly of Kola has moonlighted on many local artists work including The People’s String Foundation, Jack Wallen and Brother & Bones.

Following an uninspiring recording session in a well equipped studio, Gareth & Annie realised they were moving away from the very core reason for forming in the first place, and decided that in order to capture the intimacy present at their live shows the EP needed to be recorded in a different way. So recording for their debut EP ‘A Little Light’ was taken out of the traditional studio environment and relocated to a variety of spaces that afforded beautiful, natural acoustics. Rather bravely, the whole process was recorded live and without the spit and polish of so many overproduced offerings coming out these days the EP really shines for its stripped back honesty. The duo were accompanied by a string quartet for the recording process, playing parts written by BBC Concert Orchestra violinist Sarah Freestone, bringing the tunes to life and capturing something quite unique.

“Lyrically, it’s a pure delight” – by NEIL MCFADYEN Folk Radio UK

In support of the EP the pair have released a couple of videos for tracks on the forthcoming EP, which has gained them support from Folk Radio UK. Some mentionable gigs the duo have done, since the beginning of this year include: support for George Ezra, Bellowhead, The Webb Sisters, Winter Mountain, Mad Dog Mcrea, Emily and the Woods, Jack Harris, The Portraits, Roo Panes and Sam Brookes. Recently they were hand-picked to go up to LauLand and play on the Emerging Talent Stage at The Sage, Gateshead. Off the back of a summer of festivals, including: Port Eliot Festival, Leopalloza, Boardmasters, Galtres Parklands Festival, Purbeck Folk Festival, Bictonfest and Looe Music Festival, the duo released their EP at an intimate gig at Lusty Glaze, featuring a string quartet at the end of September 2014.

Since releasing their EP, Gareth & Annie have been recognized by the likes of Bob Harris and were invited to do his ‘Under the Apple Tree’ Session. A Little Light’ was featured as Folk Radio UK’s Album of the Month and the duo have been selected by Tom Rose (Reveal Records) for his 10 Days/10 Artists Management Project. The Pair have also been busy gigging continuously and appreared at venues such as THe Acorn Theatre, The Barrelhouse, Totnes and CB2 Cambridge. Currently, they are working on writing material for the next EP.
